First off, I would like to thank everyone who showed up at tryouts today -- it was a great success. The players showed great effort.
First, the numbers: For the first day of our 2010 tryouts, we had 20 players show up. This year, we doubled that -- 40 players attended!
Here's the breakdown:
- U9 Storm - 15 players (Seven 8-year-olds and eight 7-year-olds)
- U10 Storm - 12 players (All 9-year-olds)
- U11 Storm - 7 players (All 10-year-olds)
- U12 Storm - 6 players (All 11-year-olds)
As I told parents today, we are aiming to build four competitive teams. The maximum number of players is 14 players for U9 and U10 and 16 players for U11 and U12.
A remote possibility is the formation of a girls squad if we have enough players within a two-year bracket. We could even consider creating a U8 team, if we get 12 to 14 interested kids, but the board has so far resisted the idea, since Rec seems better suited to the U8 group.
We are working with the Barrington Recreation Department to aid their soccer program, and any players who do not make a BSC team can find a home there for the current year. The BSC will hold more skill clinics as well as Winter Futsal, so we hope to offer players who do not make the travel teams additional opportunities to play.
For U9, we have enough player to form a team, but I would like anyone interested to tryout, especially 8 year olds. The problem with the current distribution is that we will likely have a light U10 team next year. We will be cutting to 14 players, but we will likely only take a maximum of four 7-year-olds as to not jeopardize the future of the team.
For U10, we hope to find at least 2 more players. If more than that show up at the next tryout, we will have to make cuts on that team as well.
For U11 and U12, we need to find players. So I would ask parents to talk to friends and acquaintances who are interested in soccer and see if their children are interested.
So here is our current needs:
- U9 Storm - adequate numbers, but anyone (7- or 8-year-old) should tryout
- U10 Storm - adequate numbers, but the more 9-year-olds, the merrier
- U11 Storm - need at least 5 players (only 10-year-olds)
- U12 Storm - need at least 6 players (only 11-year-olds)
Finally, I would like to thank John Lamarre, Drew Williams, Dan Sheehan and Rob Quaglieri for coaching during the tryouts.
See you at the Barrington Elementary School on June 26 for the second day of our tryouts!
