On Thursday, the BSC board voted unanimously to adhere to strict age groups in the formation of teams. This post explains the policy.
For the 2011 season and future seasons, the BSC has adopted a strict policy of no movement between age groups. The U12 team will consist entirely of 11 year olds; the U11 team entirely of 10 year olds; and the U10 team entirely of 9 year olds. The only team that will have multiple ages will be our youngest team, the U9 team, which will consist 7 and 8 year olds.
During the 2010 and 2011 season tryouts, a number of parents asked if their kids could play up a level so as to be with friends or to ease logistics. Last year, to make the formation of teams more likely, the BSC accommodated parents.
However, allowing skilled players to play in a higher age group weakened teams and made them less competitive. In addition, players can build confidence by playing in their appropriate age groups. Finally, the board feels it is unfair to cut players from a team to accommodate the movement of a younger, albeit more skilled, player in an older age group.
As such, the board has adopted this policy. Feel free to send us feedback.
